CWSC Santos going to Provincials!! (1)
CWSC Santos going to Provincials! The CWSC Boys U14 Santos soccer team will be one of the teams representing Calgary at the Tier 1 Boys tournament in Lethbridge August 18 – 21. It has been a very rewarding season as the boys worked extremely hard to achieve one of their key goals of making it to Provincials. The coaching team, and all the parents are extremely proud of the boys for their sportsmanship, teamwork and the character they showed during very intense competition throughout the season. With the unfortunate departure of 2 key players, and several injuries, the team has picked up several players from other CWSC teams for the Provincial Tournament. While overcoming this unexpected hurdle, Santos is now firmly focused on performing up to our highest potential, with our eye toward Nationals. Go SANTOS GO!!! -
CWSC Sparta going to Provincials!!! (1)
Congratulations Team Sparta Mother Nature brings many challenges to our outdoor soccer program. This year was no exception. Numerous rain-outs brought about the rescheduling of several games, which left Team Sparta playing 5 games, in 5 nights, as they fought to represent Calgary West at the 2011 GU 14 Tier III Provincials. With a dwindling roster, each game became more and more challenging. Special thanks goes out to several U12 girls from Team Vasco who's commitment to soccer assisted us in achieving our goal and becoming CMSA 1 at provincials in Beaumont, Alberta from August 5 - 7. The coaches and team management would like to thank all of the girls for their hard work and dedication. GO SPARTA GO!!!! -

Joshua We wish CWSC Newcastle the best of Luck at Provincials in Red Deer! GO NEWCASTLE GO !! -

CWSC Nacional takes home 3rd place!!! (1)
“Work hard, have fun!” This is the mantra of CWSC Nacional, and one that has served them well for the exciting 2011 outdoor soccer season. Nacional was forged from thirteen enthusiastic 10 to 12 year olds boys, two of whom were new to the competitive soccer arena, but all of whom play soccer at every opportunity-- at school recess, in basements, and even on their desktops. Of course, players alone don’t “make” the team. Our three coaches worked tirelessly with the players to improve their skills and confidence on the field. We were fortunate enough to have a professional trainer (who works regularly with elite athletes, including the Calgary Flames) work on the boys’ fitness levels at most practice sessions. Lastly, Nacional parents were a dedicated and generous group, car-pooling to games and practices, and cheering their throats raw at games. Yes, you can get calluses from clapping too hard! Our season was not smooth sailing. As all Calgarians know, spring weather can be an unpredictable third competitor in any outdoor sporting event. Gale-force winds, bone-chilling rains, and golf-ball-sized hail were nasty obstacles that competed only with ravenous mosquitoes to challenge our boys. Nacional began as a tier III/IV team and fought hard to finish the seeding round at the middle of the pack. The July play-offs saw the boys lose two of their skilled players to summer travels. Despite this loss, the boys quickly recovered and transformed into a united force on the fields, placing top in the tier IV A division. The day after play-offs ended, Nacional was launched into the Provincial Cross-over game against the MSB Strikers. Despite having played soccer three consecutive evenings beforehand, our boys worked hard that night and it was epic. Regulation time yielded a no-score game, so our boys proceeded to the nail-biting, tear-jerking finale of a penalty shoot-out, resulting in a 2 to 1 win, and earning them one of 5 spots in their category in the Alberta Soccer Association’s Provincials Cities competition. Provincials (tier IV, Cities) were held in Airdrie this year, from July 15 to 17. Nacional began strong, with a 6 to 0 win over Chestermere United FC on Friday evening. We continued to hold great formation and practice the tactical skills learned throughout the playoffs and team support training during the second game on Saturday morning, resulting in a 5 to 2 win over Edmonton’s Crestwood team. Sunday was a tough go--the 9:00 am start time [and opposing team, Newton (out of Edmonton], proved a challenge, with a 5 to 2 loss for Nacional. Spirits were low, but a few hours away from the pitch, some lunch in their bellies, much-needed hydration, and pep talks from the coaches allowed the boys to finish the competition with their heads held high and smiles on their faces. Nacional didn’t win against the NCU Badgers (who, undefeated overall, took the gold medal), but took a 4 to 1 loss like the champions they are. As a parent (and team manager) watching the evolution of Nacional, I am truly gratified. These boys have developed fantastic group interaction and soccer-playing abilities, and enjoyed camaraderie off the fields during pool parties, and Dairy Queen or slushie treat outings. CWSC Nacional has shown us what unflagging team spirit can accomplish! *See more photos from the Provincials at: http://gallery.me.com/rmitch#100133 -

Fury Girls Silver Medalist City Finals (1)
The first game of the Calgary West Fury’s indoor season didn’t go so well. They lost by a wide margin. It was not a great beginning. So the coaches had to take a close look at this team and figure if we were capable of competing at a Tier A level. The answer? The coached and the girls believed they could do it and would not stop practicing until they became competitive. The coaches worked on different positions and really worked on skill development. Each new game, we could see the girls using what they learned in academy and practice time; putting it to very effective use on the field. The transformation was wonderful to watch. Midway through the season, the girls went up against the number one team; yes, the same team that had blown us out in the first game of the season. This was a different Fury team now. They walked away with a 1-1 tie. The hard work had paid off. Fighting for first place with this team all year long, the Fury had to face them again later in the year. The Fury dominated in every aspect of the game and walked away with a huge and decisive victory. We were in first place!. As the play- offs began, we were given the number one seed and made it all the way to the gold medal game. This was the very first time the Calgary West Soccer Club had a U10 team in Tier A go this far. In the gold medal game, the girls played hard in a back and forth, highly entertaining game. We were winning 3-2 with about 5 minutes left. However, the other team was awarded a penalty kick close in and scored to tie the game. The game went into a shoot out and, unfortunately, the Fury lost the Gold Medal on penalty kicks. . But there was no sadness or hanging of our heads. This was a season to be proud of. It showed that Calgary West could produce and coach players that can play and compete at these levels. The Fury girls made us all so proud with their heart, determination and never-say-die attitude. The coaches were beaming with pride. Way to go Fury girls! You did all of us proud. -

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TIER “A” GIRLS U10 BRONZE MEDALISTS (2)
Wow! What a season. Our first game of the season was a nail biter that our girls won 1-0. After that, the games became more challenging. What impressed us about this group of girls was that they never became discouraged and they kept fighting, kept practicing and kept improving. By mid season, we could all feel things starting to turn around. Our games were all very close and we were now starting to carve out some wins. In our first game of the playoffs, the girls had to face the first place Blizzard Heat. The Blizzard’s had prevailed over the Fury all season, yet the girls battled and were only down by one goal until very late in the game. A few days later we faced the Cochrane Wolves: a team that we couldn’t beat all season. We were losing 1-0 with 5 minutes left and the girls shifted into another gear and took it to the Wolves. With 10 seconds left, the Fury tied it up on a beautiful indirect penalty kick. We ended up winning the game on a shootout as our goalie did not allow even one goal. We were now playing for the bronze medal! Facing NW United, the final game was a nail biter, but our girls simply willed themselves to win. They played with more heart and determination than they ever had and won the game 1-0. This was the first year that the Calgary West Soccer Club had ever entered a Girls team in Tier “A”. And the result was a Bronze Medal! Congratulations and many thanks to the wonderful coaches, Head Coach Glenn and his Assistants Chris and Mike, who believed in this team and taught them the skills to improve and be successful. Thanks also to the parents, family and friends were always cheering and encouraging the girls. But most of all, congratulations to the U10 Fury girls, who will always be remembered as “the little team that could”. -

Super U8 Wrap Up (19)
On Saturday June 20, the six Super U8 teams held their last two scheduled outdoor season games. To cap off the season, teams organized a mini-tournament around these last two games. A season ending final third game was added. The three final matches for the six teams were decided based on the outcomes of the first two games making each of the teams season finale games competitive and exciting. Fans were treated to some excellent soccer enjoying the games under a beautifully sunny sky. Team Chivas took the overall title as tournament champions but it must be noted that success at this level of soccer is measured in skill development, team play and the fun factor. All the teams and their players are champions. CWSC Head Coach, Milan Bartosz, observed the first matches played and then he gathered the players and their families to congratulate them on participating in the first-ever Super U8 competitive soccer season. The Super U8 league was a tremendous success and is a wonderful way to channel the competitive juices of these young athletes as many look forward to playing U10 Competitive in the next outdoor season. The balance of the players will be “veterans” of the league leading their Super U8 teams into yet another wonderful season next year. Thank you to Glen Snarr for organizing the tournament. Thank you to all of the coaches and team managers for pioneering the Super U8 League. See you next season! CWSC -

The CWSC Revolution team did splendidly in the tournament as they finished third. Every player stepped up and contributed to the scoring and phenomenal defense. The team stonewalled the opponents throughout the 4 games allowing only 8 goals. The games were well played in a 2-3 loss, a 0-0 tie, a 1-3 loss, and a 3-2 win. There were great displays of scoring prowess from everyone on their 6 goals: an end to end dazzling double tic tac toe weaving through the opponents to beat the keeper for a goal, an end to end D rush for a goal, a header goal off a free kick to the far side, a long pass from a D to a break away striker who punched the ball passed the charging keeper, and a three way tic tac toe for a goal. The beaming players are: left to right(3rd row) Christina, Patricia, Alana, Emily, Sydney; (2nd row) Christen, Emma, Gabby, Chantal, Carissa; (front row) Kierstyn. -

Indoor 2008/9 3vs3 Tournament March 15 (8)
Hello Calgary West parents and players. I hope all the players who participated in our 3v3 indoor tournament on the weekend enjoyed themselves regardless of their wins or losses. I particularly enjoyed watching many of our Comp players playing alongside our Premier players. The event went quite smoothly. We had three no-shows in total so rather than change the whole schedule the teams that only had two players played 2v2 against the other teams in their division. I wish to thank Teresa Hirata and all the volunteers for their help, Nigel Brattle and Lee Jackson for refereeing all the games and all the parents for their wonderful non-coaching support of their children. -

Winning Ways for Aston Villla Indoor 2008/9 (2)
Congratulations go out to the Aston Villa U14g for a terrific and hard fought season. This season had its fair share of up and downs and I’m proud to say at no point did the girls ever give up on themselves! After placing 1st in the seating round A/V (who I might add are all 1st year U14’s) battled in each and every game coming up just a few points shy of a provincial playoff spot. Our season ended off at Edmonton’s Slush Cup with two wins and tie, only to lose in a shootout thus earning a silver medal. On behalf of the coaching/management team, all the parents and family ...THANK YOU GIRLS FOR A GREAT SEASON, IT WAS ONE HECK OF A RIDE. Brad Thompson (Coach Aston Villa) -

Their first game was a close one against Red Deer which resulted in a 4-4 tie. The next morning at 7 am they faced Edmonton and blazed ahead 7-0 with great passing and shooting opportunities, as well as a shut out for our goalie Mathew Saly!!! The final game against Lethbridge was extremely exciting, as we needed the win to claim the gold. The boys were on fire, coming out 6-2 in the final score. In fact you could say it was a "Golden Day" for our BU10 team as Arsenal captured the gold medal in the Fall Cup (BU10 Group D Division). Parents and relatives were treated to an exciting 3 to 2 finish in a match against a very good Chinook Spurs team. U10 Boys Tier B CWSC Arsenal - Divisional Champions! (1)
CWSC BU10 Arsenal completed a fantastic spring outdoor season with only 1 loss in 15 games, including winning all 9 of its second round games to claim the Division Crown for Tier B Division 2. As was evident in their play all year, the boys never gave up in any game to ensure they always gave their best to come out on top. Great passing, determined defense, outstanding goalkeeping - the boys jelled from day 1 and got better every week. Now, while the players earned their well deserved Championship, much credit has to go to their very supportive parents and families. Parents, who battled the weather, the mosquitoes and the hectic year ending schedule to get their boys to and from the games and practices, provided refereeing when they were missing, managed the sidelines, built nets, organized coffee runs, etc., etc. Awesome support...every team should be so lucky to have had this great group of parents. And without the outstanding organization of our Team Manager, Glen we would have been a far more stressed out and grey haired group of Coaches and parents. Finally, when one experiences such a tremendous season you never want it to end, so we're coming together again in September for the Fall Cup. On behalf of us Coaches Bruce, Barry, and Peter we hope you have a great summer. We'll see you all in August for Fall Cup training and for the start of a successful indoor season. -

Milan U12 Boys Outdoor 2007 (9)
CWSC U12 Milan enjoyed a very successful 2007 outdoor season. The boys gelled as a team quickly and played the season with consistently strong team spirit and sportsmanship. Opposing coaches commented on the quality of Team Milan's play. The boys only lost two games, including a Fall Cup game where they were only able to field 7 boys and narrowly lost against a full opposing squad. Thanks go to Coaches Maury McNeil and Dave Burns for balancing technical and team instruction, and to the boys, who made every game fun to watch. -

Aston Villa U12 G Comp A (3)
The Aston Villa "Gremlins" had a great weekend. The girls played their hearts out and earned themselves a silver medal. Saturday we played two games winning the first game 5-0 against a team from Aldergrove. The afternoon game was a different story, after falling behind 2-0 against the PSA Predators. The girls rallied together to come back and tie the game with under 3 minutes left, never giving up and getting a number of opportunites to win the game. Sundays gold medal game against St. Albert was a hard fought battle for first. Down 1-0 at the half the girls once again fought back to tie. Needing a win for the gold they pushed St. Albert to the wall! Close but no cigar..(they are not supposed to smoke anyways). They walked off the field to a standing ovation from friends and family not to mention the fans from St. Albert. We as coaches couldn't have been more proud. Brad Thompson Assistant Coach Aston Villa "Gremlins" -

A real testament to the hard work and skill of all Torino players and their coaches Ibrahim and Steve. Congratulations Torino! The Gremlins- Aston Villa team played magnificently in the Edmonton Slush Cup round robin. The girls dominated most aspects of the three games such as being first to the ball, passing well and making effective shots to the net. Kierstyn was absolutely brilliant in net giving the Gremlins three shut out victories. The wins propelled the team into the Gold/Silver medal -finals against the St. Albert Grapes of Wrath. In this game, the girls played one of their strongest opponent of the season. The Gremlins put two goals on the scoresheet first but the Grapes answered with 3 more goals in the end of the second. Silver it had to be!! The tournament was an overall success. Well done girls!!! -
